Karabagh

The Karabagh district, meaning “black garden”, lies in the southeastern part of the Kazak region, in the southern Caucasus, along the border with Iran (Persia). This historically rich area has been influenced by various cultures, particularly Persian, which is clearly reflected in its carpet-making tradition. The region is primarily inhabited by Armenians and Azerbaijanis, and is known for its long-standing carpet production and highly developed dyeing techniques. During the 16th and 17th centuries, under the Safavid dynasty, a court manufactory existed in Karabagh. The brilliant Shah Abbas recognized the region’s immense value as a creative design reservoir in the Caucasus and contributed significantly to the flourishing of the carpet arts during his reign. Karabagh carpets are known for: • A pile height that is lower than Kazak carpets but higher than Shirvan types • Finer knotting and more differentiated colors, especially in red and blue tones • Frequent use of cochineal red dye (Porphyrophora hamelii), a prized natural pigment Notable villages in the Karabagh district that are centers of carpet production include Chelaberd, Chondzoresk, and Shusha. The designs in Karabagh rugs are highly varied and artistic. Common motifs include: • Repeated boteh (paisley-like patterns) • Single and multiple medallions • Bouquets of roses • Herati motifs • Prayer rug designs These carpets are not only beautiful but also carry the legacy of one of the Caucasus region’s most sophisticated and expressive weaving traditions.
